Seven Morning Rituals for a Low Impact Lifestyle
What would your perfect morning look like?
1. Start with a little #soulcare
Our morning starts with mindfulness and movement. We live simply, and a meditation or a morning bike ride really infuses our day with purpose. Soul care and mental health are such important elements of a sustainable lifestyle.
2. Find a routine that keeps your footprint small and your life simple
Whether going green is a new habit or you're a seasoned zero waster, starting your day with eco-friendly, low impact products is essential. We usually conserve water and roll out of the house au naturale, but when we do opt for a quick shower, especially after some exercise, we reach for our plastic free, natural Shampoo Bar and our stainless steel Safety Razor.
3. Get that power breakfast.
Jumpstarting your metabolism really does make breakfast the most important meal of the day. Start with a tall glass of water and some delicious superfoods, and you're sure to notice a difference in your energy throughout the day.
Make sure to compost or cook with any food scraps, and get your avocados, acai, bananas and other goodies somewhere local like our all-time favorite, Top Banana! This year-round indoor farmer's market is always overflowing with the most beautiful, ripe, imperfect fruits and veggies from local farms. Truly a Seattle treasure. Do yourself a favor and shop small.
4. Take care of your smile
I think we can all agree there's worse than getting to work, flashing a confident smile and later realizing you've had that cilantro stuck in your teeth since breakfast. 5. Perfect your zero waste coffee routine
Whether you're the type that enjoys brewing a fresh cup of coffee to sip in front of your garden window or walking over to the local café for your regular order, there's a way to make this tradition zero waste. One of the best things you can do is bring your own mug; since coffee cups can't be - or aren't - always recycled, it's better to play it safe and BYOC.
A french press is a beautiful age-old tool that can help you avoid the use of coffee filters at home. If you're loyal to your pour over, the reusable CoffeeSocks we carry are an easy alternative to using filters. They work in regular ol' coffee makers, too! Reusable is always the best option, because even the compostable filters take lots of water to produce and carbon to transport.
6. Stay informed
I like to read the Climate section of the Times on my iPad to avoid the paper and plastic waste that comes with a newspaper subscription. There are many other resources we follow such as Zero Waste Washington and Patagonia Action Works to name two.
7. Pack a healthy lunch
With all the chaos of modern day life, it's so important to get proper nourishment. If there's anything we've learned over the years, Zero Waste involves lots of planning ahead. Meal plan a few healthy recipes (check out one of our favorite sustainable food bloggers here), pack your lunch in a sturdy reusable food container, and grab a set of utensils so you won't be tempted to use plastic, single-use tableware in a pinch.
Anything that's part of your daily routine has a larger impact than you might think. If you're not sure how to take the next step, try tackling one room or activity at a time and slowly find new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Low impact living is all about the process.
